| | Volunteers at the first day of rink construction | | |
Saugus Youth Hockey and Saugus Youth and Recreation Dept. in cooperation with the Town of Saugus are developing our first seasonal outdoor ice skating rinks to be located at the Saugus High School. Construction on the rinks began Saturday.
These non-profit organizations are working together in an effort to provide the kids in Saugus a safe place to skate and play hockey this winter.
There are two surfaces presently are under construction. The first is a 170’ diameter free formed surface on the south end of the upper field which will be dedicated to public skating. The second 100’ x 50’ framed half rink which will be used for hockey and other events.
Once the weather gets cold enough, the areas will be flooded. As soon as the surfaces freeze, they will be open to the families of Saugus for skating at no cost – we’re looking for two good months of skating.
Showing their Saugus spirit, over 40 volunteers braved the 30˚F degree temperatures on Sunday morning to help out. Volunteers included Saugus High School Varsity Hockey players and Coaches, Saugus High School Girls Field Hockey and Basketball players, Saugus Youth Hockey parents and players, Town employees, and Lowe’s Home Improvement employees.
Saugus Business Community partners stepped up in a big way to sponsor the rinks and provide funding, materials, labor and expertise including: Wheelabrator, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Saugus Chamber of Commerce, Williams & Sparages Engineers, Agganis Construction, and Dicks Sporting Goods.
Several special events are now in the planning stages including a Winter Carnival, Hockey Weekend Across America, Alumni Games, etc. Fund raising opportunities will be available to town youth groups and will be coordinated by the committee. Donations to fund equipment, netting, lights, benches , warming areas, and other maintenance supplies. Donations can be made through Saugus Youth & Rec.
